This is a boron carbide blend for boronizing. It is not too coarse (not enough contact between B4C particles), and not too fine, which would cause caking (too quick of a reaction).

Generally sold in quantities of 50lbs or more, although you may order as little as 5 lbs below. This blend has a boron content of approximately 76% to 78%. Please use our Quote Request page to obtain a bid for quantities over 50lbs.

Hexagonal Boron Nitride is one of the most popular dry lubricants available today, due mostly to its lubricant properties, thermal conductivity (heat sink), and its inertness to molten metals and salts. It is often incorporated into a paste, for use in high temperature coating applications, such as tooling and stamping machined parts, extrusion presses, mold release, etc. Our high temperature coatings (paint) are non flammable and stable.

One of the benefits of working with Boron Nitride in paste or coatings form, is that you will not have the risk of airborne particles affecting your process, or your workers.

How is it applied? It is generally painted on with a common paint brush, but it will depend on your application.

How is it sold? It is formulated by the gallon, and therefore sold by the gallon. Discounts available with 10 or more gallons purchased. Minimum purchase is one gallon. Additional sizes include 5 gallon pail or 55 gallon drum.

What is the viscosity? Depends on your application. This will vary from light (for use in a spray gun) to very thick.

What is the color? By default, we will color the paste blue so that you can tell when it needs re-applying. If you do not want any color added, please tell us. It will be white in color if we do not add pigmentation to it. (It will simply look like a thick white paint.)

What is the Boron Nitrde content? This will vary from 5 to 40%.

What is the cost? This is a custom product, and cannot be ordered online. The percentage of HBN in the paste will, among other things, determine price. Please Contact Us with the following information and we will quote you a custom coating:

1. What is the maximum operating temperature the coating will be exposed to?
2. What is your application, how will you use it, what type of machine or surface are you applying it to, etc.?
3. How thick (viscous) do you desire the paste to be (if known)?

What is Hexagonal Boron Nitride Powder? This product has structure and properties similar to graphite. Hexagonal boron nitride powder is one of the most popular dry lubricants available today, due mostly to its lubricant properties and its inertness to molten metals and salts. It is therefore often used as a mold release agent.

HBN (White Graphite) also has high thermal conductivity. This means it will act as a heat sink, helping to keep parts cooler. It will also improve the strength and hold ability of powder composites, and has high load bearing properties.

We generally sell Hexagonal Boron Nitride as a dry powder, but upon request, we can provide it as either a thick paint or thin paste (sprayable), convenient for use with tooling and stamping machined parts.

Sizing Nomenclature: A -5 (Negative Five) micron material will have the majority of its particles smaller than 5 micron, generally having a D50 of 2-3 micron. Think of D50 as an average, although technically, the D50 is considered to be the average particle diameter by mass. (D50 = Mass-median-diameter (MMD)).

In the same way, a -10 (Negative Ten) micron material will have the majority of its particles smaller than 10 micron, generally having a D50 of 4-7 micron.

These powders are not "graded" powders, which means that the D50 will vary somewhat from lot to lot. If you have specifications of sizing which must be met, be sure to communicate that to us.

Premium (Cosmetic) Grade is typically used in the cosmetics industry and has the same general chemistry as Standard Grade (although it does have a slightly higher purity of 99.6% vs 99% for Standard Grade). It is just put through an additional cleaning process to remove any element (very small percentage) of dark particles. It is hygroscopic in nature and must be handled accordingly.

Handling Warning: This material is so fine it is hygroscopic. Thus the particle size will increase due to "attraction" or "clumping" of the particles together, once exposed to air and humidity. Make sure you use the material immediately after opening, package it tightly, and store it in a temperature and humidty controlled environment. Once it begins conglomerating, it will be difficult for you to "unstick" the particles. Therefore, make sure you handle this material appropriately. We can package it in a variety of ways to help you with your particular application.

This material is processed in a diamond laboratory, where the temperature and humidity are controlled. Make sure you take steps to preserve the quality of this powder once you open your package.

Second, since HBN is extremely fine, fluffy material, it can cause respiratory tract infections. So try to minimize inhalation. (No specific intervention is indicated as the compound is not likely to be hazardous by inhalation. However, if symptoms occur, consult a physician.)

Copper Slag Sandblasting Abrasive Now Available With Blastox?

Blastox? lead abatement additive is now available with our copper slag abrasive grain.

Pressure sandblasting pots superior to siphon pots

Sandblasting with a pressure pot is in general, four times faster than using a siphon pot. A siphon pot will rely on the weight of the sandblasting media to feed down into the air stream, and thus is prone to sputtering. Due to this, you may have to use a steeper cone in the bottom of your siphon pot, for lighter weight media such as walnut and corn cob to feed correctly. Even then, you may have to stop and agitate the pot from time to time to get the grit to feed down into the air stream.

Pressure pots on the other hand, use compressed air, set at variable pressures, to throw the blasting media against the object being blast cleaned. It should also have a metering valve which regulates how much sand or grit gets thrown into the air stream. The sandblaster will need to adjust the air pressure up or down, (along with their distance from the object, and the angle at which the blast media is flung at the object ), in order to achieve the desired effect. Having the ability to control psi, as well as how much abrasive is released into the air stream, is important with some of the newer sandblasting medias.

For example, one of our most economical aluminum oxide blasting grits is called Sinterblast . Sinterblast is a brown sintered aluminum oxide product, vs the usual brown fused aluminum oxide. It is made from the same raw feed stock media, yet the manufacturing process of sintering versus fusing uses less electricity. Less electrical consumption is thus the main reason for its lower cost. It is a very hard, durable blasting material, and has been gaining in popularity since becoming available in the US. Not only is it more economical than brown aluminum oxide, it can be recycled. Some companies are also reporting back to us that they use less of it, and can go further between orders. However, Sinterblast requires a lower psi than regular brown aluminum oxide, and should be blasted around a 60 psi. If you do not turn down the psi, you will not achieve optimal results and should therefore switch back to regular fused aluminum oxide. For this reason, we caution against buying Sinterblast if you do not have good communication with the person in control of the actual blasting, or that person is unwilling to adjust the psi accordingly.

New steel "Metalette" grit is available in all hardness ratings. Our steel grit is a fast cleaning, low cost, durable blast media for all blast cleaning. Sizes available are G18, G25, and G40.

All metallic abrasives are sold by the net ton, or per 2,000lbs. Packaging normally consists of steel drums, although we can package into 50lb bags, palletized.

Green SiC is made from Silica sand and coke, and is extremely pure. Hexagonally shaped, it breaks into very sharp particles. Green SiC is harder than black, coming in at a 9.4 Mohs and 2600 on the Knoop scale. Green is often the media of choice when it comes wire sawing.

What Is Sinterblast?

Sinterblast is a new sandblasting abrasive made from the same raw feed stock as fused aluminum oxides (Bauxite). Sinterblast is created via a sintering process, not the normal fusing process. This sintering process uses less electricity than fusing does, allowing this media to be priced significantly lower than brown fused aluminum oxides.

Sinterblast is a high temperature calcined bauxite abrasive grain; 78 pecent aluminum oxide, 13 percent iron oxide. It is often used as to replace brown fused aluminum oxide due to its lower cost. Sinterblast is a very hard, tough abrasive, allowing it to be recycled many times, just like regular brown fused aluminum oxides.

PSI Information:

Sinterblast should be blasted at a 60psi in general. This is a much lower psi than regular brown fused aluminum oxides (80-90), so please make a note of this. You will not obtain ideal results if you do not start with a lower psi. Sinterblast is slightly more friable than brown fused media, and this is why you need to use a lower psi. Since you can reclaim this media multiple times, the cost savings of switching to Sinterblast can be impressive. Some of our clients have switched 100% to Sinterblast (from brown fused aluminum oxide).

This is a new blast media designed to be used for general blast cleaning. You will notice by the picture, that instead of round little balls, this is a flat, sharp product. This is a wrought carbon steel blast media whose performance is identical to that of standard SAE grade steel shot. The wrought steel microstructure (average of 44 Rc hardness) contributes to high strength, greater fracture resistance and longer life. In lab tests performed in an Ervin Test Machine and in actual production tests, the durability of our Steel Nuggets has proven to equal or exceed other steel shot and grit medias on the market today. These nuggets are ideally suited for either centrifugal wheel blast or air-blast applications, and are available in sizes 780 through 330.

This powder is manufactured specifically for wire saw slicing. Emphasis has been placed on grain shape during the crushing process, along with a special multi-stage gradation process. 5 lb minimum order.

The F400 B4C-SWS is often used for wire saw slicing applications (40/12 mkm). F360 B4C-SWS can also be used as well (32/8 mkm) for wire saw slicing.

Please note that these two products are different from standard F360 and F400 Boron Carbide powders, so make sure you are ordering the correct item. If the product item code contains "SWS" it is designed for wire saw slicing. If you are seeking a boron carbide powder to polish sapphires , please look for a model number that ends with the letters "SP".
