Copper Slags

Independent studies have shown Copper Slag to be the fastest cutting slag abrasive!

Facts:

  • Copper slag is a hard, cubical, and aggressive sandblasting media.
  • Recyclable:  Dense enough to be reclaimed via a Cyclone separator:  115 to 120#'s/cubic foot.
  • Listed on Naval QPL-22262
  • Environmentally friendly.
  • Approved for recycling in Portland cement.
  • Best abrasive to use when ranked on cutting speed and cost per sq. ft., according to independent NIOSH tests.
  • Both arsenic and lead testing is done to the material and is therefore on the United States Naval Qualified Products list.
  • California Air Resources Board  (CARB) approved for dry outdoor abrasive blasting.

Packaging and Freight Info.:

  • Packaging:  Bulk (loose), 2 ton supersacks, or 75 lb bags.
  • Sold by the flatbed only. 22-24 net tons per load.
  • Can deliver to port of LA for approx. $670.00 freight per 24 net tons, excellent for export.
  • Priced per net ton, or per 2,000lbs.
  • Shipped via flatbed only.
  • You must have a forklift at the end destination to unload the flatbed.

Reclaiming Copper Slag Tips

  • To increase the number of uses, turn down the psi until you cannot see the material come out of the nozzle. If you can see it, it will not cut well, as you have too much in your air stream.  Start with a psi of 80 and adjust it upwards from there. A higher psi will not equal a faster or better cutting rate.
  • Try adding 15% new media back into the mix as you blast reclaimed material.
  • Can also be mixed in with steel shot and grit.
  • Dense enough to be used in a Cyclone blasting machine.
  • When blasting pipelines, try blasting new media on the inside first, then the reclaimed material on the exterior second.  In this manner your first pass will be as a 1230, and the second as a 2050.
  • To get at least three passes:  Start with a 1230, turn down the psi, and consider adding 15% new into your mix.  You can often obtain 5 passes if you do this.
  • 32% iron:  It will be attracted to a magnet and is dense enough to be reclaimed.

Aggregate Properties:

  • Sand Equivalent:  91%  (Extremely clean, with few contaminants such as ash, clay, etc.)
  • LA Wear:  4% Loss  (LA Wear test is a test where the material is tumbled 100 to 500 times, then measure for loss of particle size.  A low number like 4% indicates a very good, low level of loss.  This is a test that is not really applicable to the sandblasting applications, but does indicate how tough the material is.)
  • Uncompacted Voids:  45.6%  (Uncompacted Voids is a test that is irrelevant to sandblasting, it measures how well our material packs for roads.)
  • Fractured Faces:  100%  (Fractured faces means that we have 100 percent fractured material and not rounded, making our slag excellent for sandblasting.)
