Glass Is Great! Why?

DUST IS TRANSLUCENT!  No visual barrier to the blasting operator and does not leave black "dust" all over.

SAFE - no free silica, is chemically inert, odorless, non toxic, and does not contain heavy metals like mineral slags can.

MULTIPLE SHIPPING ORIGINS - Chances are we can find a location fairly close to you, saving you money on freight!

Precast Concrete Blasting - you'll love our glass media!

Blasting precast concrete panels creates a uniform color to your panels.  Regardless of whether you are trying to expose the aggregate or just create a uniform color amongst all your panels, blasting with glass abrasive is preferred due to the lack of perceived cleanup.  Your spent glass blasting grit is white in color, so the desire to sweep it up just is not there!  Once you use glass, you will never go back to mineral slags.

Roofing Granules
Did You Know? Air cooled copper slag is often used in roofing products such as underlayment rolls and laminated shingles. Copper slag has excellent UV protection and adhesion in asphalt shingles. It is also often used in cut off wheels and grinding wheels (2050 size being the most common).

Waterjet Cutting
Copper slag is now trending toward replacing garnet for underwater deep sea abrasive cutting. Due to its lower cost, as well as being more gentle on cutting equipment, copper slag size 2050 is now becoming the main abrasive for dismantling underwater structures. Oil pipelines, drilling platforms, and hurricane damaged facilities are just some examples of what is being dismantled by the use of copper slag.

"Working Mix" vs "As New"

What is the difference between a "Working Mix" and "As New" material? "As New" means virgin material. It has never been used before. A "working mix" is what is needed when someone is turning on a blasting operation for the first time and they do not have a full blend of small and coarse sizes. This is necessary when blasting with metallic abrasives such as steel grit and shot. Once a Working Mix is achieved, you then slowly add new material into the hopper as needed.

Purchasing 100% new steel grit is fine as long it is going into a hopper for a pre-existing operation. If your operation is brand new, then you should order a working mix (startup mix) or you will not achieve desired results.

Over time, as the steel abrasive breaks down, finer particles get sucked into the dust pan.

What Is Friability?

Simply put, Friability is a term that describes how easily a substance will break down into smaller pieces. In the field of sandblasting, it refers to how quickly a sandblasting material will shatter upon impact when thrown at an object.

White fused aluminum oxides for example, have a high friability and will thus break down quickly. Brown fused aluminum oxides will be more durable, and thus last longer, being available for recycling multiple times.

However, both brown and white aluminum oxides have the same hardness rating.  A common mistake is to assume that an abrasive with a high hardness equals an abrasive that will not break down quickly.  This is not the case.  So do not confuse hardness with friability.

Silicon Carbide History
Silicon Carbide (SiC) was the first synthetic abrasive to be produced and also the first to be commercialized. 1891 was the year that silicon carbide production began, and thus revolutionized the abrasive industry as a whole. Before 1891, almost all abrasives were naturally found such as rocks and minerals.

Corn Cob Abrasives

Corn cob media is great for sandblasting fiberglass, aluminum and wooden boat hulls.  The biodegradability of this type of sandblasting media makes blasting on beaches or in dry docks much more acceptable.

Removing Thick, Rubbery Elastomeric Coatings?

Our 30/50 Glass Abrasive is perfect for removing this type of coating and it will cut much faster than traditional slags.

Glass Blast media is also great for leaving a very clean surface on concrete. Available in many sizes, there are grades available for achieving all MIL Profiles on everything from structural steel to delicate substrates such as stainless steel, aluminum, wood, concrete  and fiberglass.

Made from 100% recycled material, glass abrasive contains no heavy metals or crystalling silica.  It will deliver a clean, white finish on steel in less time than slag abrasives.  If you are using nickle or copper slags right now, you may want to explore the many benefits of switching over to glass abrasive.

Did You Know This About AL2O3?

Aluminium oxide is widely known for its hardness and strength, which is why it makes such a great product for sandblasting media and sandpaper.

However, it is often used as a pigment as well, such as in epoxy flooring applications where a translucent or white colored abrasive is desired.

Obtaining a 3 to 4 Mils Profile With Aluminum Oxide

Did You Know? Brown Fused Aluminum Oxide 16 Grit will leave a 4 mils profile, and a 24 will generally leave a 3 mils profile on mild steel.  NOTE: This is based on using a constant air pressure of 90-95 psi nozzle pressure, long venturi nozzle held 18-24" from the surface, and at an angle of 85-90 degrees to the workpiece. Anchor pattern on harder metals will be less unless Air Pressure and/or abrasive mesh sizes are adjusted. Due to cost, Aluminum Oxide should ideally be used only in an enclosed blast room or cabinet where it can be contained and reused.
